Sunday Post #38/Sunday Salon #11

Kimberly at Caffeinated Book Reviewer hosts the weekly Sunday Post link-up, and Deb at ReaderBuzz is expanding Sunday Salon from a FB group to a link-up as well.

What I Read
3 really good books and one great one! I finished the Last Policeman series (great and satisfying ending, and an amazing number of meandering plot paths come together). I finished listening to and reading On the Come Up (go me for finishing a book I was juggling last week), and I read The Strange Fascinations of Noah Hypnotik, which I just bought for my classroom. It was weird in a good way, but the ending kind of cheats.

Darius the Great is Not Okay is way more than okay. Something about this book really moved me. It feels slow, but never boring. It's definitely one of the best books I've read this summer.

What I'm Reading/What's Next
Still slogging away at Outrage and The Paris Wife. I keep getting distracted by shiny new books! I also still have literally 46 books checked out from the public library AND well over that number I brought home from my classroom, so clearly, choice is not a problem.

Three Things
  • We went on a family outing up the Columbia River Gorge. It was too hot to do the hike we'd planned--we made it about 20 minutes before my face was stop sign red. So we did a short hike in the trees and then sank our feet into the creek by a smaller waterfall.

  • I spent an afternoon at my sister's doing arts and crafts.

  • I attended a funeral for a high school friend's dad in the morning and had dinner with a different high school friend I'd been out of touch with for awhile in the afternoon. They both look WAY BETTER than I do--strong, slender, great skin and stylish hair. They've also both gotten divorced recently. You can't tell people's struggles by looking at them.
I love summer. I hope you're having a good one.

  1. I'm so glad to see your thumbs ups for Darius as well as On the Come Up and Last Policeman. Last Policeman is one of the 1001 Children's Books so I am hoping to read it soon. I've heard other positive thoughts about Darius. I'm happy you enjoyed it so much.

Sometimes it's more difficult to focus on reading when you have so many possibilities to choose from.

You can't always tell people's struggles by looking at them. Very true.

    Have a lovely week!

    1. It must be a different book with the same title--this one is part of an adult mystery/spec fic series.

  2. That waterfall picture is amazing! Summer hikes are tough. I always wish I liked doing that sort of stuff, so I could still have my youthful body. I loved Noah. I get what you are saying about he ending, but the journey was fantastic, and the ending didn't bother me as much, because at least Noah got somewhere with his personal conflict.

  3. Gosh your library’s lending policy is generous! Ours is a max of 12 books for three weeks.

    Have a great reading week

  4. I’m pretty sure I have Darius on my TBR list, so I’m happy to hear that it’s good. Cool waterfall photo. I wish there were more waterfalls here that are easy to get to. I have to look at them from a distance.

  5. That waterfall photo is so cool! Honestly, all the photos are gorgeous and it looks like you had a great time. I hope you have a wonderful week!

  6. Lovely pictures from you hike! Have a great week and I hope you can stop by:

  7. Adib Khorram spoke on one of the panels at the SCBWI event I just went to (Writing Books that Matter). I definitely want to read his book now.
